Relocating for a Job: My Experience One Year Later
"Hey everyone, it's Dorian here. Today, I want to talk about a topic that's both exhilarating and terrifying: relocating for a job. About a year ago, my family and I made the bold decision to move to a new state for a job opportunity that presented itself to me. It was a move that required us to sell almost everything we owned, including our house, and embark on a journey to a place we'd never lived before."
The Decision to Move
"After working for two years at my first web developer job, I felt ready for new challenges. This led me to update my resume, reach out to recruiters, and eventually land an offer for a developer position at a big airline company in Las Vegas. However, life had other plans, and soon after accepting the offer, I received another call for a job in Washington State that aligned more closely with my career goals."
The Move
"Choosing the job in Washington meant a significant lifestyle change for us. Despite the job in Vegas offering more pay, the opportunity in Washington promised more growth and was in line with the tech stack I wanted to work with. The decision was made; we were moving to Washington. It was a moment filled with mixed emotions, from excitement about the new opportunity to fear of the unknown."
Challenges Faced
"One of the biggest challenges we faced was selling our house and finding a new one in Washington. The process was stressful, and for a while, we lived out of suitcases in a hotel. However, we saw this as an adventure, an opportunity to start fresh. Financially, it made sense too. We were able to pay off our debt and even had a down payment ready for a new home once our house in Vegas sold."
One Year Later
"A year has passed since we made the move, and I can confidently say it was one of the best decisions we've ever made. I've grown so much in my new role, and my family loves our new home and the adventures we've embarked on since moving. Sure, there were fears and uncertainties, but the experience has been overwhelmingly positive."
